I was recently a part of a RIF (third one in a year). As the last director from the previous RIF, I intentionally focused on scaling my leads instead of my own job security. My leads are now highly independent and able to leverage my framework to ensure they are maximizing the business value they create. I put people first.
At the same time, I am thrilled how much longer this RIF was delayed because of the vendor cost reductions my six teams were able to accomplish, in just six months (49% reduction compared to the 20% goal!).
Critically, I knew my role wouldn't make sense in the next RIF, as the size of the company doesn't warrant two engineering leaders. At Snagajob, we were helping people find fulfilling work, which was both empowering and fulfilling for me. Every minute working at Snagajob, I was helping one more person make ends meet through a new role. It felt (and still feels) like the right thing to do.
